The president of the Spanish Aerospace Technology Platform (PAE), Silvia Lazcano, took M&M Group as an example of the development of a sustainability plan within the aerospace industry, especially in reference to the measurement of results and the establishment of emissions KPIs in the production phase, during a round table organized on October 19 at Metal Madrid by the Industry and Energy Forum and the specialized magazine Fly News.
During this round table, entitled “Energy management in the aeronautical industry“, Lazcano pointed out that most of the carbon footprint emitted by aviation (98%) comes from emissions due to the consumption of aircraft in operation. In any case, the industry has taken actions to reduce these emissions in the production phase and is working on specific R&D&I projects to do so. She also stressed the importance of measuring results and the establishment of KPIs. She mentioned the cases of Airbus and M&M Group, member entities of the Platform, with innovative projects in this area.
It should be remembered that sustainability is not only part of M&M Group’s production processes, but is also the main axis guiding its Technology and R&D projects, such as Deepest, ACTIVAL or Green Bath.
On the other hand, the highest representative of the PAE recalled that “the objectives of decarbonization and energy savings in the aerospace industry are well before this crisis, and the approach is not based on costs but on sustainability. To achieve them, it is essential to focus on innovation, where the increase in energy costs is having a negative impact“.
Gonzalo Solís, Repsol’s commercial manager for international aviation, José María Pérez from the CDTI (Department of Large Installations and Dual Programs) and Albert Concepción, president of the Industry and Energy Forum, participated in the round table together with Lazcano.
